About Foothill High School |
|
Foothill High is a dynamic school where
effective educators work continuously to provide an outstanding education for
all students. Our dedicated and qualified staff is committed to bringing
out the potential in every student who enters our doors. Our
qualified staff is committed to the education of our students both in and out
of the classroom.
Students are valued and parents work with the school to help make our
school culture very strong. Parent support is evident at our events and in
our school’s development of facilities. The learning environment is
safe and comfortable. Many of our students are involved in school activities
and enjoy our school. Assessment results have consistently shown that our
teachers are providing a high quality standards-based curriculum for our
students. When Foothill High School was created, the first staff
members came together and wrote the Faculty Covenant as an expression of the
educational beliefs of the school. Faculty Covenant We believe that education at
Foothill High should foster a climate of caring in a community of students,
staff, and volunteer workers which offers mutual support. We believe that teachers and students
should show a willingness to be flexible and open to change in an atmosphere
of academic excellence. This will allow the students to feel the sense of
satisfaction with the results of hard work, dedication, and achievement in
all areas of endeavor. We believe that the development of
a person is as important as the learning of a subject. We support the total
school program in the context of developing competencies not only in
computation and composition but also in sensitive reflection, the individual’s
effect on others and on the community. As teachers, we will model respect for
physical as well as intellectual competence. Foothill High School graduates
will demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge and skill in course work,
as well as a vision of future goals. We believe that students and teachers should have room to work and learn in their own appropriate ways. The goal of Foothill High School education is to lead students to focus on the use of their minds in life-long learning. By keeping the structure of education at Foothill High simple and flexible, we aim to provide the right incentives for students and teachers to achieve educational success. |

II. School Climate
School Safety Plan
This section provides information
about the school's comprehensive safety plan.
|
Foothill High School thoroughly reviews all school safety procedures throughout the school year. A comprehensive plan is developed each year to adapt to new school facilities and improved methodologies utilized throughout the state. Drills are conducted ranging from fires to imminent danger and armed intruder(s) on campus. In-service meetings are consistently held to prepare the entire staff for circumstances that could potentially threaten student safety. New maps and evacuation plans were developed in the spring of 2006 to further improve the processes utilized at Foothill. |
School Discipline Practices
This section provides information about the
school's efforts to create and maintain a positive learning environment,
including the school's use of disciplinary strategies.
|
Parent involvement at Foothill High School is very
strong, with several active parent groups meeting on a regular basis. These
include very active Sports and Music Booster groups, the Academic Awards
Program, the Sober Grad Committee and Club Cougar. The Sports Boosters are
the cornerstone of two extremely important field projects completed at
Foothill. Through virtually all private donations of time, labor and
resources, members of this group and their affiliates developed our varsity
soccer field and our junior varsity and varsity baseball fields as well.
These are top-notch facilities that are used not only by Foothill athletes,
but the community as well. The Sports
Boosters have also funded the construction of a snack bar in our new
community stadium and have donated $25,000 toward the completion of an all
weather track on campus. Each year the
Music Boosters help spearhead the extremely popular “An Evening at Club
Cougar.” This annual dinner dance combines over 150 students from the
drama, band and choral programs into eight performances that raise nearly
$10,000 for the fine arts at Foothill each year. The event is in February,
and tickets are typically sold out the previous fall. Our parent members
of the Academic Awards program are highly visible on campus, as parents from
these groups are at school each Wednesday at lunch passing out rewards to the
students who have earned either Red or Silver cards. Over 500 students each
quarter qualify for this program. Red cards are awarded to students who have
perfect attendance or a 3.0 to 3.79 grade point average. Silver cards are
awarded to those with a 3.8 grade point average or higher and to those who
are selected as student of the quarter finalists. Red card holders may go off
campus at lunch on Fridays (with parent permission) and silver card holders
may leave campus every day at lunch (also with parent permission). This
program has been in place for several years and also includes quarterly
assemblies to name the student of the quarter and to honor various winners of
awards by department. The trophies and rewards provided are paid for through
donations from generous local businesses. Nearly 1000
students take part in a variety of clubs, extra and co-curricular activities
including Student Government, Band, Choir, Drama, Key Club, Foreign Language
Club, Truth Club, Yearbook, Web Publishing, Future Farmers of America (FFA),
California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and Future Educators, to name
several. The staff at Foothill is constantly seeking ways to involve students
in school activities to boost student satisfaction with school and improve
campus climate. We also offer a
full complement of extra curricular sports teams that are competitive at the
league, section and state level. In the past year, 567 athletes (unduplicated
count) have competed on 33 different teams representing Foothill High School.
Athletes compete under the California Interscholastic Federation and, as
such, we have adopted the concepts and philosophies of the Pursuing Victory with Honor campaign.
This statewide effort reinforces the concepts of sportsmanship and fair play at
all times. Our athletes are held to the highest standards of citizenship in
defeat as well as victory. Currently, 81% of our varsity coaching staff, or
17 out of 21 varsity positions, is filled by Foothill staff members. We
believe this is reflective of our overall commitment to students both in and
out of the classroom. When disciplinary measures are necessary, we always use a proactive approach and communicate with parents throughout the process to improve student behavior. Whenever possible we use creative methods including Saturday school, lunch time detention, and campus beautification as alternatives to suspension. Our district has also implemented a drug diversion program designed to assist students who may have used or been in possession of a controlled substance on campus or at a school event. |
